Reviews
This Catalogue Raisonne has the worst color reproduction in the many color plates of any art book I have ever seen. Very disappointing. I do not know if it was the paper quality, which is heavy and glossy, the printing process (from Singapore), or some other error. The quality is also inconsistent. The pictures described as "photomechanical reproduction" are the worst, but most have too much contrast, are dark, poor color separation and gradation, overly enriched color, and differ dramatically from the original paintings. I have seen many Russell paintings in person and reproductions of Russell paintings in other art books. These are very poor by comparison. It's hard to believe that a book which is a collaboration from the University of Oklahoma Press, The Charles M. Russell Center, and the C. M. Russell Museum, and which contains nice essays and most of his works, got published with such inadequate color reproductions. Far below the quality of similar art books.
